Day trips: Portland, Oregon

Planning a trip to Portland? While there’s plenty to do in the city, be sure to also check out these nearby spots that offer a quintessential Oregonian experience and make the perfect day trip to add to your vacation itinerary.  

Hood River:  

Hood River is a small town an hour and a half drive outside of Portland. Here, you can find outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and biking. For hiking, check out Ainsworth State Park which offers multiple trails at various levels as well as stunning views along the way. If you want to explore the sights a little more,  rent a bike or book a guided tour with Bike the Gorge. Experience the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge and bike along The Historic Highway State Trail. If you want to get out on the water, head to the Gorge Paddling Center to rent a kayak to explore the Hood River waterfront.

After some outdoor activities, recharge with a bite to eat in downtown Hood River. The local restaurants are known for their fresh produce thanks to the Hood River Valley which allows for plenty of farm-to-table fare. If you are a pizza fan, check out Solstice Wood Fire Pizza. This pizzeria is known for its riverfront dining and 72-hour fermented dough, making it the perfect spot to relax at the end of the day. If unwinding with a good beer is more your style, then check out Ferment Brewing Company. This brewery is known for its 1800s English brewing techniques that is sure to give you a unique tasting experience.  


Willamette Valley:

The Willamette Valley is located just under an hour from Portland and is a wine enthusiast's dream. Oregon is one of the top wine producing states in the country, and the Willamette Valley is home to hundreds of wineries. That’s why it’s known as Oregon's Wine Country! Be sure to try the Resonance tasting room, located on a hilltop and offering views of the sprawling vineyard. Tastings can also be accompanied by a tour of the estate where you can experience the architecture and the history of the winery.

Cannon Beach:

Take a day trip to the coast and explore Cannon Beach. Just 80 miles from Portland, this town offers scenic views of the Pacific and rocky coastline. Visit Ecola State Park, spanning nine miles of coastline withfun activities such as surfing and tide pooling. The park's popular tidepools offer a fun and unique experience for the whole family. There are also great hiking trails highlighting the wildlife in the forest along the way. Speaking of wildlife, Ecola State Park also has splendid view spots for whale watching. Just a few miles from Cannon Beach you’ll find Hug Point. This recreation site offers easy access to beach caves and waterfalls.
