From underground to the skies: Amanda’s journey to becoming a Sun Country engineer

Updated: Oct 8

In recognition of Engineering Week, we're spotlighting one of our skilled engineers, Amanda, and her significant contributions to our team. As a crucial team member, she is pivotal in ensuring your travels with us are smooth and safe.

Her journey in engineering began after she graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. "I started my job as an engineer working underground at a salt mine 1600 feet below Lake Erie," she recalls. "It was super awesome, but I soon realized that my passion for travel was something I wanted to incorporate into my career."

Safety is paramount in engineering, and Amanda takes this seriously. She focuses on understanding the root causes of flight diversions or returns to the gate for mechanical reasons to prevent future occurrences. "Safety is essential to us," she emphasizes. "Through reliability, our main focus is on understanding the root cause for any events that happen."

Amanda's role extends to exploring new technologies to enhance operations and improve the customer’s experience. Collaborating closely with other departments, particularly our IT team, she implements continuous process improvements, ensuring the airline stays ahead of the curve. "Implementing continuous improvement into Tech Ops (our maintenance department) really could not be done without our IT team," she said. "Partnering with them has been wonderful; they have been fantastic."

Amanda advises aspiring engineers: "Show up and work hard. As long as you have a strong work ethic, you can accomplish anything you want." She underscores the importance of dedication and perseverance, acknowledging these traits as essential for success in the aviation industry.

When asked about her future at Sun Country, Amanda said, "In five to 10 years, I see myself as a leader, focusing on problem-solving projects and enhancing efficiencies for the airline." Apart from her professional pursuits, she enjoys the flight benefits we provide employees, allowing her to explore new destinations and create travel memories.
