This summer we launched our internship program, offering 21 students the chance to dive deep into the world of aviation. During the 10-week program, interns gained hands-on experience by working on dynamic, project-based assignments within their respective departments across the organization. From strategizing on cutting-edge projects to collaborating with our seasoned team members, they didn’t just learn—they contributed in meaningful ways.
Our holistic approach made this experience stand out. Beyond their daily tasks, interns received mentorship, career coaching, and professional development opportunities. We created a collaborative environment that encouraged connections through networking events, including lunch & learns with company leaders and informal coffee chats with our executive leadership team, which gave interns exposure to every area of the business. The program culminated in presentations where interns showcased their innovative work.
Steven, from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities: "This summer, as the flight operations/system operations control intern, I have gotten to learn so much about the behind-the-scenes work that contributes to the success of Sun Country Airlines. Some of my favorite experiences include auditing aircraft, spearheading the acquisition of additional rafts, and helping ensure the quality of our Make-A-Wish flight experience. A huge thank you to the amazing group of people at Sun Country who welcomed me and helped me be so successful during my time here!"
One of the program's highlights was intern aviation day, where interns experienced a day in the life at our hangar and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Terminal 2. At the hangar, they got up close with our aircraft, learning about the maintenance, engineering, and safety protocols that keep our fleet airborne. At the airport, interns participated in a pilot walk-around and explored the complexities of the ticket counter, baggage handling, airport control center, and ramp operations. They even helped push out a few planes!
Ali, from the University of North Dakota: "As a brand marketing intern at Sun Country Airlines this summer, I've had an incredible experience enhancing our brand across social platforms. From sharing employee stories to promoting destination content, I've been incredibly lucky to be part of such an inspiring team that has encouraged my creativity and embraces new ideas. This role empowered me to be hands-on from day one, taking full ownership of projects and witnessing firsthand the results of my contributions. This internship has not only strengthened my marketing and communication skills but also deepened my passion for strategic branding and the airline industry, and I could not be more thankful for this experience!"
Interns from across the U.S. contributed to valuable work all summer. At the program’s end, they presented their final projects. "I was incredibly impressed with the quality of work each intern produced and the positive feedback we received from their leaders," said Bailey, our human resources business partner and program leader.
Bailey continued, "Watching our interns develop personally and professionally over the summer was a special experience. They learned new skills, explored new projects, met new people, and fell in love with aviation. We’re excited to continue the program, and we hope to see some of our interns return to Sun Country while creating more connections with students and colleges all over the country."
Our internship program is more than just a steppingstone; it’s an entryway into the fascinating world of aviation. We're excited to see where our talented interns will go next, and we look forward to continuing to support the next generation of aviation professionals in years to come.
