The holiday season is approaching at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), and the terminal is beginning to feel like your favorite family gathering—busy, lively, and full of people on their way to somewhere meaningful. Like any good gathering, things can get a little hectic—lines might stretch longer, and bags seem heavier—but with a little prep and a few smart tips, you’ll breeze through MSP with confidence.

From going behind the scenes at MSP and chatting with travelers each season, I’ve learned that small moves can make big differences. Flights and airport parking fill up fast, so booking your seat, parking spot, and even that essential airport coffee ahead of time can save you headaches later.

Arriving early is also my secret weapon. It leaves plenty of time to glide past the chaos, grab a snack, and even enjoy people-watching. A good rule of thumb? Plan on arriving two hours before taking a domestic flight or three hours before an international flight

Checking in online is also a true holiday gift to yourself. Save your boarding pass to your phone wallet or use our mobile app for easy handling as you go through security. At MSP Terminal 2, security checkpoint 1 serves all passengers, while checkpoint 2 is reserved for those with TSA PreCheck or priority status (available for purchase when you check-in and so worth it if you want easy sailing through security and boarding). Be sure to check MSP’s security wait times online to ensure you are giving yourself enough time or avoid the line completely with MSP RESERVE! Just schedule a good time to go through security and zip right through — for free!

Packing smart is where true magic happens. Wrapping gifts early may feel festive, but if TSA needs to check your luggage, your hard work could end up unwrapped early. And let’s be honest, rewrapping at the gate is no one’s idea of holiday cheer. Instead, leave gifts unwrapped and tuck them into packing cubes. It helps keep things organized, saves space for souvenirs, and hides surprises from nosey travel companions.

And then there is always the wildcard of pesky Midwest weather. It has a flair for drama, especially around the holidays. A storm halfway across the country can cause a ripple effect for disrupted flights, so be sure to check your flight status and set up text or email notifications to stay in the loop. ons to stay in the loop.

Holiday travel may never be completely stress-free, but with a bit of preparation, it can still be merry. Arrive early, pack smart, and remember to breathe — the holidays are waiting, and your journey is part of the adventure.
