Sharing a love for STEM with local students

Updated: May 7

Recently, our employees who represent our information technology department met with local fifth grade students to share how they use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in their careers.

In partnership with STARBASE MN, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on hands-on learning and engaging STEM activities, we recently participated in their STEM @ Work program. At the event, participating students were able to learn about data management and visualization, as well as the basics of computer networks. Our employee volunteers used visual demonstrations and real-world examples to illustrate how information technology is used in aviation and at the airport.

In addition to the STEM @ Work program, we recently teamed up with STARBASE MN to shoot a video with Captains Laura and Brianna McMahon.

A BIG thank you to the Medtronic Foundation who funded the making of this video and other educational videos through a grant to STARBASE Minnesota.

In the video, the captains talk about their education and experience, what they do to prepare for a flight, as well as how they utilize STEM to get passengers and cargo to their destinations safely. This video along with other STEM career videos are presented during weekly STARBASE programming to show students the variety of career fields that use STEM and why teamwork, creativity and perseverance are important.

Thank you to STARBASE MN for inspiring the next generation and making STEM fun and accessible!
